The race was on an old military camp, fully closed roads and great pavement. It’s a flat, super fast, non-technical course with a tricky cross/tailwind section on the back straight, then a slow bend back into a headwind for the finishing straight. Cal Poly was the only major team with about 3-4 riders.
The break was initiated on a collegiate points prime lap. I rolled off the front with one other rider, then a Cal Poly kid attacked across for the points and kept rolling, and finally a fourth rider bridged to us and that was the break of the day. Worked together really well and ended up lapping the field and rejoining the pack with 6 laps to go. At this point I should have stopped chasing attacks and allow the Cal Poly team to keep it together for their leader, but I made a tactical mistake in the moment and pulled back a few solo attacks. On the final lap Cal Poly lead it out for their leader who took the win in the reduced bunch sprint, and I hung on for 3rd.
