The team was comprised of 1 legend (Bill Lupo) and 1 much younger rider (Wilson Gorrell). The day started with a 3:45am wake up call to make the scenic drive to Lake Los Angeles. Some might mistake this town for where all of the movie stars hang out on the weekends, however, not the case. The weather conditions were 61 at the start with 18mph winds. This would require more concentration to keep these TT rigs in a straight line. The first leg was in the tailwind section and averaging 30+mph wasn’t a problem. 20 minutes later we hit the long headwind section. It was long and agonizing and the best way to describe it was like a 4 hour visit to the dentist. Hitting the final leg was a welcome relief knowing that the suffering would be over in about 12 minutes. Cresting the final rise and seeing the finish line was truly a welcome site! As we rolled back to the start, Bill and I looked at each other and we didn’t have to say a word. Why did we drive for 5 hours to suffer on the bike?
